Avalanche is a blockchain platform designed for decentralized finance (DeFi), digital assets, and trading. Created by Ava Labs, it allows very fast transactions — usually finished in less than one second. The main network launched in September 2020, and its token AVAX is used for paying fees, earning rewards, and network governance.
Ava Labs was founded by Emin Gün Sirer, Kevin Sekniqi, and Maofan “Ted” Yin. Sirer is a computer scientist known for his research on Bitcoin and blockchain scalability. The team, based at Cornell University, includes experts in technology, finance, and law.
Avalanche uses a Proof of Stake (PoS) system, letting users stake AVAX to help secure the network and earn rewards. The system is designed to be fast, energy-efficient, and secure against common PoS weaknesses.
